Runners Against Cancer and AIDS

What is RACA?

RACA stands for Runners Against Cancer and AIDS. It's not really a group or an organization but more of a way of getting an idea to runners and other track athletes across America. People of all ages can participate; high schoolers, college students, or anyone who runs races or competes at track meets.

What is the purpose of RACA?

The purpose of RACA is to help those struggling with cancer and AIDS using our talents.

How can I achieve this purpose?

Many of us have paid that dollar or two for those yellow, pink, red, and/or teal bracelets as our way of helping those suffering from cancer and/or AIDS. For many of us we feel like there should be something more we can do to help but we have some realities to face. Most college and high school students don’t have a lot of money to donate, or at least not a lot of money to make a great difference, and we also don’t have a lot of time to give to help others because of school and running. But there is a way to make a difference through our talents. For many college scholar athletes and high school athletes, we are unable to receive prizes or prize money from unsanctioned races. Our alternative is to give the prizes up and let the meet directors deal with them, usually the next place finisher receives the prize. Well, from now on, instead of letting the loser behind you get the prize, ask the director of the meet/race if they could donate the prize to either a cancer/AIDS research organization, a hospital for cancer/AIDS patients, or have them give the prize to a local person suffering from cancer or AIDS. If you are a recreational runner and you can take prizes or prize money from races, why not donate it to an organization or someone who is struggling with cancer or AIDS. No matter how big or small the gift is the person receiving the gift will have the feeling that there are other people in the world who care for them. That's just one more reason for them to live up to their bracelet and Livestrong.
